10 Weeks Pregnant
— End to the embryonic period and the embryo now called as fetus
When you are 10 weeks pregnant, the roller coaster of nausea and morning sickness almost comes to an end, but the emotions such as happiness, sadness, madness, and crying are revving up. You may still feel tiredness, moodiness and nauseated.
You may start to notice blotchiness on the face. You may also experience some skin problems because of the changes in hormone levels. This is the time to consider first medical checkup and you can clearly hear your baby’s heartbeat during the ultrasound scan. As it is the first medical examination, it is completely normal to feel scary, but you should keep in mind that this is the first stepping stone in the life of your little one. So, it is important to be monitored by your healthcare provider.

Morning sickness will be reduced a bit this week and this will be a more stress relieving factor for you.
Most of the pregnancy symptoms that you experienced in previous weeks will almost come to an end. With the increase in your belly size, you may start to feel slight discomfort. The discomfort will increase when you reach the end stages of pregnancy.
Lower back pain is one of the most severe symptoms that you experience during this week. Frequent headaches and feeling stressed are also the common symptoms when you are 10 weeks pregnant.
Physical symptoms experienced by a 10 weeks pregnant woman:
When you are 10 weeks pregnant, you will notice a significant growth in the size of the placenta as well as functioning. It will change some of the hormones in the baby’s body and thus avoiding some hormonal burden on your body.
Significant changes in the hormone levels can make your gums swollen and inflamed. This condition is called as pregnancy gingivitis. Usually, this condition affects between 3-9 months of your pregnancy.
When you are 10 weeks pregnant, taking good care of yourself is very much important to decrease the chances of miscarriage. Ensure that the environment you live is good and pleasing. With this week, your pregnancy enters into a most stable state and there is light change in your hormone levels.
Your blood volume increases by 40-50% and the veins in your legs, breasts and tummy will become more noticeable during pregnancy week 10.
From this week onwards, the physical changes that happened in your body will be noticed by your near and dear ones.
Fetal changes that occur in a 10 weeks pregnant woman:
This week your baby is between 31 and 42mm (1.25 – 1.68 inches) in length and weighs approximately 5 grams (0.18 ounces). The size of the baby during this week is almost double when compared to past three weeks.
Though your baby may be small, he/she will be active, swallow the fluid and kick the new limbs.
The vital organs of the baby such as kidneys, brain, liver, lungs and intestines are fully developed and start functioning. The head of the baby is almost half the length of the entire body. Forehead bulges temporarily and positioned high on the baby’s head. Later the baby’s shape will be structured and well noticed.
When you are 10 weeks pregnant, the baby will get verifiable fingers and toes. The eyes of the baby will be closed until you reach the end of the second trimester.
This week, you will notice a rapid development in the skeleton bones. Pregnancy week 10 is considered as the end of embryonic period and the embryo gets a human like appearance.
Baby’s spine will become visible and spinal nerves spread and start functioning from this week. The baby’s length will start growing fast from this week onwards.
- Consider regular health checkups because any problem that occurs during pregnancy may cause severe damage to the baby.
- Along with regular check up, make sure to schedule a dental appointment as pregnancy from this week may increase the risk of developing pregnancy gingivitis.
- Take adequate levels of prenatal vitamins regularly, such as vitamins B, vitamin C and vitamin D and calcium as well as proteins for your healthy gums and teeth.
- Wear comfortable and loose clothes. Wearing a good supportive bra is very important as it can reduce breast tenderness.
- This is the week to observe your baby’s movements. Expect them and rejoice while feeling them. Pregnant women will describe those moments as very emotional ones, particularly for first time mothers.
During this week, it is completely normal to feel tired. When you feel exhausted, take a break from work and give time to relax. Taking afternoon naps will help to decrease the most discomfort in your pregnancy.
Fainting and dizziness are the most common symptoms during first trimester and sometimes they continue for the whole pregnancy period. So, take care of yourself from falling as it will damage the baby inside you.
The period in between pregnancy weeks 10-13 is the time to have chorionic villus sampling test. When you are 10 weeks pregnant and almost reached at the end, then you can consider having this test. But make sure that the clinic you choose for the test should be a reputable organization with good record.
Avoid exposure to environmental hazards, second hand smoke and the consumption of alcohol. Try to include more relaxing activities in your daily schedule. Being relaxed is very much essential for healthy growth of your baby.
